Economic Development

La Pine is a growing community located just 30 minutes south of Bend – the region’s economic center.  With 1,600 in-town residents and over 16,000 people within a 20 mile trade area, the city offers a diverse mix of commercial and industrial business opportunities with north and south sections along U.S. 97, a downtown core on Huntington Road west of the highway and a sizable industrial park to the east.

La Pine is near Sunriver resort, a world-renowned community with an airport and other extensive amenities for both visitors and residents.  Together, La Pine and Sunriver are the magnets of the southern part of Deschutes County.  Deschutes County has a total of 165,000 residents.

The two communities are nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, surrounded by open meadows, lakes and rivers.  Strikingly beautiful and with unparalled access to the wonders of Central Oregon. Proud, independent and affordable, La Pine is characterized by people being good to each other.  La Pine has a deep sense of community and is a place where people go out of their way to help a neighbor and truly care about each others’ well-being.

Midstate Electric Cooperative

MEC's primary mission is to provide safe, reliable and cost effective utility services to its member/owners in the Central Oregon area.  MEC is also involved with the different communities it serves, offers a variety of programs for the students in the local elementary, middle and high schools, supports the local businesses and promotes economic development.  MEC offers a number of different products and services that have been developed to assist residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural member/owners.

As a preferred customer of the Bonneville Power Administration, MEC retains first right to low-cost federally owned hydroelectric resources.  As a locally controlled utility, MEC has a significant competitive advantage in siting new businesses and has competitive electric rates far lower than most parts of the United States.

La Pine Industrial Park

La Pine Industrial park has an available area of over 150 acres.  It makes an ideal host to various industries, particularly data centers and call center operations.  MEC is the park's anchor tenant and connects to low cost BPA hydroelectric power.  Power is extremely reliable with uptime greater than 99.999%.  Over 10 megawatts are available now and expandable as needed.  In addition to power, state certified parcels have been made build-ready, complete with water, sewer, and fiber optic internet services.
