Midstate Member,

We’re writing to inform you about an important update to your prepaid electric account. For the first time, your account has been billed demand charges. We want to ensure you understand how this impacts your balance and how it works within your prepaid bill.

What are demand charges? Demand charges are based on the highest level of energy (measured in kilowatts, kW) consumed during a 30-minute period. This is separate from your standard kilowatt-hour (kWh) energy usage and facility charges.

How does this affect your prepaid account? Your prepaid plan is reconciled monthly (mid-month), and at that time a demand charge is applied, based on the highest demand recorded.

The prepaid system monitors peak demand daily and adjusts accordingly if the peak demand increases during the cycle.

 Example:

  • If peak demand is 10 kW on the first day, you will be billed for 10 kW.
  • If peak demand rises to 12 kW on a later date within the same billing cycle, you would be billed for an additional 2 kW.

Members are only billed for additional demand charges if their peak demand exceeds the previous highest demand recorded during the billing cycle.
